‘Underneath every behaviour, there’s a positive intention’

In NLP, human behaviour is not seen as being random. There will always be a purpose, a reason, and a “positive intention‟ behind it. Sometimes the positive intention is not really apparent as it is frequently out of conscious awareness. For example, some people start smoking at an early age because people in their peer group smoke and they start with the positive intention of becoming accepted by them. Years later, they can find it really difficult to stop, and although the situation has changed, the “part‟ responsible for the initial actions is still very active. Another really strong positive intention is needed to stop. Every person makes a decision with the information that’s available to them at any given time, always with the aim for a positive outcome. It is not uncommon for self-harming individuals to say that they “cut” to appease emotional pain. They might even know or recognise they shouldn’t do it, and although I imagine the physical pain is great (if they are able to feel it, or sense it negatively), they don’t do it because it makes them feel worse. Even when individuals “like” pain, they inflict it on themselves because they see it as positive; -They Like it. If eventually such an individual comes to a point where they don’t like doing it anymore but are now “stuck” in the familiarity of it, that’s a different issue, that could mean that they are ready to accept another form of thinking or adopt other ways of dealing with, whatever reasons. At any given time a person commits a deed is with self-rightness. Self-gratification Self-defence

Self-preservation Self-accomplishment.

People who want to commit suicide, for example, because they believe others will be better off without them, if they do recognise, selflessness, selfishness, self-pity, self-judging or not is irrelevant, they are doing it with the seemingly good intention that this is the best decision, based on the limited self-evidence that they are able to discern at the time with the very little, self-interpretation that they self-asserted to be the absolute truth. People, are by default, unable to see past their own elucidations. People don’t see beyond their own judgment about their opinions. Even when someone understands that their perspective are their own, that others might have a different opinion, and even respect it, most people lack the flexibility to “step away” from their attachment to their firm self-attained convictions, rendering them unable to apply other conducts of doing the same things. This doesn’t go for negative aspect only. Some people insist on always being “positive”, or what they self-defined as being positive. They have created a stance about how they go about Life. Self-affirming their determination to always see the “bright side” of Life. This creates tension once a different view is needed to tackle an issue, this person has now created an attachment to always act and react in, what they believe is positive and lack the flexibility to accept and implement other behaviours.
